UK Trip, Day 4: Ancient Sites

Our fourth day in London started off pretty slow. JP and I went our separate ways in the morning, meeting up after lunch at the Thistle Hotel in Victoria Station. There we rendezvoused with our tour outfit, Astral Travels, for our sightseeing tour of ancient sites outside the city.

The first stop on our trip was West Kennet Long Barrow in Wiltshire, part of the Avebury complex of Neolithic sites.

Leaving the barrow, we headed on down the road. Not far along, we passed an early 19th-century chalk horse (Alton Barnes horse, if memory serves) carved into a hillside.

The next stop on the tour was the village of Avebury, built partially inside Avebury Stone Circle.

After Avebury, we stopped in the village of Marlborough, perhaps the oldest village in England, dating back to the times of the monuments that the region abounds with. It has an air of history about it, many of the buildings looking like they've been there for at least a couple of centuries. There we grabbed a light dinner of fish & chips and relaxed a bit. JP tried to visit the famous Polly Tea Room for a cuppa, but it was closed.

From there we drove onward to what was for me the high point of the trip: an evening special-access, behind-the-ropes tour of Stonehenge.

After that we headed back to London, having a pleasant chat with some of the other people on the tour most of the way.
